Distributor advance It doesn’t matter what kind of ignition you have, if the advance curve is not set properly it won’t make any power. The ignition is advanced so you reach peak cylinder pressure right after TDC top dead center. If the spark comes too soon the burning fuel will try to push the piston back down the cylinder before it reaches TDC, resulting in a loss of power and possible engine damage. If the spark is too late you will not reach full power and get poor gas mileage. There are two major factors that effect how much advance is required, engine speed and load. You increase advance with rpm and decrease advance with engine load.

Tweet When you are working with a vehicle that makes around 65 horsepower to the rear wheels, you need that power to work as efficiently as possible — loosing up hill drag races to semi trucks can be embarrassing. If you have ever owned a classic car with a stock inline 6 cylinder, you know exactly what I am talking about. We are going to be yanking the dying engine for a HP ci in a few months, but I wanted to get all I could out of the engine before it is yanked.
Even though it ran, it ran rough.
Dec 10, · Hi John. I am also trying to hook up a factory tach to a Blazer but it has a 77 engine with an HEI distributor. There are two wires coming off the tach connector, the red one goes to the fuse box and the black one goes thru the firewall and is laying there unconnected.
Next The ignition coil is the part of your engine that produces high voltage in order to power your cylinders. The distributor is what gets that high voltage from the coil to the right cylinder. The connection is accomplished through a cap and rotor. The ignition coil connects to the rotor, and the rotor spins around inside the cap. The coil passes a high-voltage pulse through the rotor each time it passes a contact in the cylinder, transferring its power to the engine.
The pulse makes its way across a little gap between the rotor and the contact, and it then travels down to the spark plug on the cylinder via a spark-plug wire. Some of the older distributers have an additional part in their bottom section.
Remove the distributor cap, right valve cover and the 4 cyl rocker arms and pedestal. Set up a dial gauge on the 4 intake push rod. Rotate the engine to TDC 1 cylinder. If the dial reads thousands, your valve timing is right. If the dial reads thousands, your valve timing is retarded or your chain is streched.
A second connection is also under the coil cover for electronic tach hook-up. This is a NEW complete distributor, not a second or blem! HEI Ignition Performance Distributor.
Development After directing The Princess and the Frog , Musker and Clements started working on an adaptation of Terry Pratchett’s Mort, but rights problems prevented them from continuing with that project. To avoid similar problems, they pitched three new ideas, and in started developing the film based on an original idea. Moana is Musker and Clement’s first fully computer-animated film. Moana Waialiki is Disney’s first Polynesian princess. The Meander digital in-betweening interface still has a host of production issues including color that need to be perfected.
After pitching the idea, a team was sent to the South Pacific for a two-week research trip. In during which, they met with chiefs, navigators, experts, and natives to garner understanding of the culture. The following research trip involved the animation and music teams. To ensure cultural accuracy, the studio created what was dubbed the “Oceanic Story Trust”. The group consisted of anthropologists, cultural practitioners, historians, linguists, and choreographers from islands including Samoa, Tahiti, Mo’orea, and Fiji.
The trust served as consultants for the filmmakers and played a major role in developing every aspect of the movie.
Damaged Mallory HEI – You Break It, You Fix It!
The small red wire going from the alternator to the key switch jumps over the wire it crosses in the diagram, it is not spliced in. Run a 10ga wire from the output stud on the alternator to the same stud on the solenoid where the battery cable is hooked to in step 1. Run a 10ga or 12ga wire from the ‘cranking’ position on the key switch to the smaller stud on the starter solenoid. Run a 12ga or 14ga wire from the ‘ignition’ position on the key switch to the 12v ignition lead on your coil, located on the distributor cap.
No resistance is used in an HEI application. Run a 12ga or 14ga wire from the ‘exciter’ red wire on the alternator plug to a keyed 12v power source.
The factory style filter looks like a condenser with a wire and connector on each end, one of which plugs onto the HEI distributor, and the other onto the tach lead wire. Hooking this filter device in series between your distributor and tach should allow your factory tach to work in harmony with your new electronic distributor.
Today, many musclecar enthusiasts have abandoned points and upgraded to some form of electronic ignition, and still many more would like to, with the few exceptions being those competing with point show-cars. And after all, why not convert? The factory has supplied us and ultimately, the salvage yards with a huge number of electronic ignition systems, not to mention what is available commercially. The factory HEI, which is what will be discussed, offers: Any performance-seeker can order an HEI from a number of aftermarket sources, and it will do the same thing as a properly-prepared factory unit from the salvage yard, except it will eat a hole in the owner’s wallet.
HEI’s do have a part stamped on the base, but without a number crunching book it will not directly reveal the year or anything else about the unit. In other words, on some cars, there will be 2 wires for spark juice, one is ‘hot’ in the ignition switch “crank” position, the other is ‘hot’ in the ignition switch “run” position. This was common in the pre cars, which used an inline ballast resistor with an external voltage regulator.
Starting in , GM introduced another engine-compartment clean-up idea, which was the internally regulated alternator. These were nice, and also eliminated the bulky external regulator. This is significant, because these cars usually did not use an inline ballast resistor, but instead used a resistance wire. Step 2 Now, determine which type of wiring harness is in your car. Verify this with a test light, one ‘hot’ wire for the ignition switch’s ‘crank’ and ‘run’ position should be found.

Overt vs Covert It is often best to blend in as opposed to standing out. In the city, that might mean driving a white sedan or van. In the bush, it might mean a camouflage or matte earth tone paint job. Other times, looking like you are not worth tangling with might be the better option. Conductive Metal Body For the best EMP-resistance, choose a vehicle with conductive metal body enclosing the engine and passenger compartment or cab over a vehicle with body panels made of fiberglass, plastic or any other non-conductive material.
Jan 08, · i will have one but you know how on the HEI distributor theres 2 wires that need to be connected, says on the cap is the 12v and tach, i cant seem to find the research on where i need to hook it ideas on where i connect it.
One minute you can be soft and absorbent over the rocks and trails, the next you can be cranked up to the max for high speed pre-running over the ruts and rocks. As it turns out pre-running can be hard on a stock ignition system. I found this out during a spring trip into the fern covered mountains when some high-speed pre-running fun shook a bug out of the ignition system of my Jeep CJ Several rounds of testing and troubleshooting yielded no cause and no fix for the ailing sparkless stock Ford Duraspark ignition system.
Before spending too much time on it, I decided it was time for an upgrade. They also make them for the 6 cylinder engine as well. They’re a durable 1-piece design with the coil and module mounted internally for an easy 1-wire hook-up. Plus by eliminating the stock AMC ballast resistor, more ignition voltage results and you get improved spark that permits a bigger spark plug gap, resulting in more power and reduced plug fouling.
When you look at a stock Jeep CJ-7 ignition system, it consists of a few key components. First the starter solenoid provides power.
Hot rodding the HEI distributor
The HEI uses a pointless distributor. It was first equipped on some GM cars and trucks beginning in the early seventies, and became standard equipment by the mid-seventies. The HEI distributor eliminated the constant servicing of the old points and condensers found in the earlier standard style distributors. The spark on the HEI system has much greater intensity that older ignition systems.
The high intensity spark produces a clean burn in the cylinders and reduces exhaust emissions.
chevy changed to HEI, need wiring diagram to hook it up. I changed from a chevy w/ EFI over to w/ HEI – Chevrolet C question.
I would like to ask other customers a question about this Product. Product Related Question Q: Can I just drop this in my 4 bolt main , hook up 12 volts , set the timing , hook up the vacuum and I’m finished. Or will there be other things that I will need to deal with. It’s in a 49 Chevy truck. This is a single wire distributor so yes is the answer to your question, this should fit all sbc and bbc I put one in a bb hooked up 1 wire that ran from 12v ign, there is another spot for a wire which would run to your tach if you have one or choose to run one, I recommend buying the pigtail that clips right into the distributor it’s easier than a wire connector ADAM from WA answered on August 25, A: So long as you install the distributor with respect to proper position nd firing order it’s that simple.
Once you drop the distributor in, you usually need to crank the engine over to allow the distributor gear and oil pump drive to fully engage. Always make sure the rotor is pointing to the number 1 cylinder and the engine is at true top dead center. Yes, drop in,set timing apply power and proper vacuum and you are ready to go. One 12 volt wire to dist.

Heres the summary in a nutshell; Replace the resistance wire that ran to your points system, from the fuseblock, with a 12guage wire pink insulated if you want to remain factory compliant and hook it up to the HEI “BAT” terminal. Okay, so you want more; The points system has two wires running to the coil, one is the above mentioned resistance wire.
This wire provides reduced voltage to the coil while the engine is running. The other wire originates from the starter R terminal the 6 stud furthest from the engine block on the starter solenoid. This wire provides full battery voltage to the coil during cranking only. All your old points wiring can be eliminated.

For more info go here. As you may or may not know, the stock internal-coil distributor on the MX-3 is very failure prone, this is almost always caused by a faulty ignition module. How Do I know my ignition module is bad? Well for one, your car will be more reliable assuming you don’t do a halfassed job of wiring it all. You won’t have to worry about your car randomly breaking down on you.
You will also notice the starting improve if you’ve had problems in the past where you have to crank it times before it starts on a cold morning. I personally feel a more consistent power curve when flooring it in 2nd or 3rd gear, my engine doesn’t stutter like it used to. I’m not going to get people excited and say I felt a power difference, but the fact it pulls more consistent DOES feel to me like it pulls harder, but it might all be in my head.
This module apparently puts out as strong a spark as a MSD 6AL ignition control box, but uses less current a max of 5amps instead of a constant 10 that the MSD requires. HEI Distributor. One Wire Hookup ?
Thus polarity of the reluctor signal is critical to proper function. The falling edge of this square wave is used as the trigger event which becomes the rising edge when the input circuit inverts the signal. HEI does not use the reluctor for dwell control, this is accomplished in the module. Dwell needs to be independent of RPM.
Nov 30, · Yes, to start with I would hook up vacuum advance to full time vacuum and see how it idles and runs. You may have to go to ported vacuum (above the throttle blade) if the idle won’t set steady or it doesn’t run like you think it should.
I’m going to post the contact info here so I don’t have to tear the house apart again looking for it. The toll free number for Sun Parts is , but they only carry parts for their current items they have for sale – and they don’t sell a distributor machine anymore. The man you need to talk to for ordering parts is Roger Kunz, and his phone number is He can get absolutely any part for the machines, and is a pleasure to talk to on the phone.
He can also point you to people that still service these machines. They are retired Sun techs, and the only problem is that they are located around Illinois okay, only a problem for those of us on the west coast.
