January 28, I found this backsaw at a local yard sale mixed in with other tools and random bits of hardware. Looking the saw over several things caught my eye and made me take a closer look. This saw at 12 inches was noticeably shorter and while the handle lacked the finer craftsmanship of old saws it still had evidence of its heritage. The saw plate was straight and the rust had not pitted it very much.
I am inclined to buy every saw I find and felt I could find room for one more. In this case I was able to date the saw based on several identifiable features including the medallion and handle shape. The medallion is brass and has Disston USA on it. When dating Disston handsaws I use http: The medallion appears to be from to The handle lacked the deep V notch that is found on most Disston saws up to but was not as bulky as newer handles, which seemed to match the date range of the medallion.

Interview with Back Saw Expert Philip Baker
I remember about ten years ago when a USA tool catalogue supplier asked me to test out the saw. The existing crosscut pattern to the teeth works exceptionally well across the grain in any wood. I wrote an article for a US mag when I was writing articles and explained the down sides of buying such saws but also suggested not disregarding them as a solid option for buying a new saw as an inexpensive option. So, here comes another spike in sales even though I may not like their business model much at all.
SAW MEDALLION REFERENCE GUIDE. Saw medallions, or label screws as they are sometimes called, are invaluable for identifying old saws. Additionally, many of them are small works of art in themselves.
Well, living in neighboring Finland I have been surprised how few of the old Sandvik saws I have found and how little they seem to vary in tooth configuration. Most seem to be full width saws and almost every Sandvik hand saw I have seen has been filed crosscut at between 5 and 7 TPI. This one is not a big exception. It is a straightback Sandvik model no measuring 24 inches and filed at 6 TPI.
This saw might not appear too appealing at first glance. But in fact this example is in near original condition. It has seen use as evidenced by the dullish teeth. But I think it has spent most if it’s existence hanging from a wall. The saw plate is distinctively breasted as were the high end saws. The teeth does not look they have ever been resharpened and the saw plate is dead straight, both at the top and the bottom. The apple handle with the distinctive dragons is also entirely intact mind you I have not as of yet seen a single wooden handle on a Sandvik saw that would have been broken.
The two etches are very much alive and kicking and the orange-hazed sheen on the saw plate was a combination of surface rust and protective oil so Iit did clean up very well. The inch models are by no means rare, but this is the first I have seen in this condition and with teeth cut like this.
STEP 1: UNDERSTAND & BUY THE RIGHT WOODWORKING HAND TOOLS
The saw mill has an interesting history, dating back at least years in Roman days and even earlier in Egypt, Greece and China. The early ones were the narrow blade, up and down saws when they were run by power , and then earlier by pit and also scaffold on ground operated by two men. Circular saws arrived and were made in England and Europe. The earliest iron saw blades were made by blacksmiths, forged and hammered out on an anvil, and then had the teeth filed in.

Keystone Saw Works David wrote: Or am I missing something? I am hoping Erv or Pete will weigh in on this issue but in the meantime I’ll take a crack at it. Disston used the ‘Keystone’ moniker on some of their second quality lines of saws, such as the Keystone ‘K’ line produced around the time of the H. These saws usually had ‘Warranted Superior’ saw medallions. Some second line Disston saws had a keystone outline in the medallion without the scales in the center.
Old and new, little and big.
Hand saws became so very old school and fell out favor, so the market for them – along with the tools for maintaining them – dried up. But – because they were so commonly used before, there’s been a plethora of old saw vises to fill the void. With the old school methods making a comeback, and age or wear claiming the life of them more and more, those tools have been getting fewer and fewer.
>Hi. I have a question about dating Disston saws by their medallions. From what I have read here and elsewhere, it seems that a Disston saw could be dated fairly well by its Medallion, as shown on the Disstonian Institute web site.

I only have one limited source of information, which is an Astragal Press reprint of the Spear and Jackson catalogue. And I cannot make out the lettering on the medallions in the catalog. I can make out quite well the lightly domed brass saw nuts, the drill pattern of the saw nuts and medallion, the gross features of the triple ring medallion but not the lettering , the exact shaping of the handle and its let-in to the plate, the shape of the horns, the flats on the handle sides, and the fact that the blade is breasted as well as skew-backed.
The slotted side of the screw, if it has one, would be on the side which is facing down in your photo. The smooth domed side showing in your link checks against the catalog. Derek’s saw can be differentiated from any saw in this catalog. Now my blather doesn’t prove anything. Because there is lettering in the medallion of the older saws which would likely either match or differentiate from yours, plus I don’t know but what the look saws continued to be made for many more years.
However, if you’re interested in buying that saw, I suggest asking Hans what he makes of it, and also is there any etch left.

The antique handsaw conundrum: The handsaw has always been the top of the workshop heap. You can use louder, faster mechanical saws, but the technology that made the handsaw the tool that built our nation literally has not been outmoded. It may take longer to get the job done, but it will definitely be more satisfying.
In addition to being workshop stalwarts, antique saws are also beautiful. Some makers add carved details to make them even more wonderful.
