Most ignition armature coils cannot be repaired and must be replaced. In some cases, the timing might be off because the engine flywheel to ignition armature coil air-gap setting is not at the proper distance. Additionally, dirt, debris, corrosion and rust on the flywheel magnets and ignition armature coil legs can cause a low-spark or no-spark condition that can be remedied by cleaning the ignition components thoroughly.
Dual cylinder model engines have two spark plugs, one located on either side of the air filter. In single cylinder models, the plug is either at the front or rear of the engine. One cylinder engines have a single knob and wing nut, while dual cylinder engines have two. Lift the air filter element from the air filter housing. Unscrew the air filter housing retaining screws with a screwdriver and remove the air filter housing from the engine assembly.
Unscrew the blower housing retaining bolts from the engine assembly with a socket wrench. Lift the blower housing cover from the engine assembly to access the ignition armature coil. If the air-gap is too large or too small the ignition armature coil will not receive the proper signal. If the air-gap setting is correct, the ignition armature coil is bad and must be replaced with a new unit.
Disconnect the negative ground battery cable. At the coil, disconnect the wire leading from the negative side of the coil to the distributor. Note the location of the number one spark plug wire on the distributor. Disconnect the spark plug wires from the spark plugs and coil.

Remove the distributor cap, right valve cover and the 4 cyl rocker arms and pedestal. Set up a dial gauge on the 4 intake push rod. Rotate the engine to TDC 1 cylinder. If the dial reads thousands, your valve timing is right. If the dial reads thousands, your valve timing is retarded or your chain is streched. If the dial reads thousands, your valve timing is to far advanced. These s are for stock engines and wouldn’t work for engines with aftermarket cams.

It eliminates the points-style ignition. Installation is about as easy as it gets, and the cost isn’t out of line, either. All electronic ignitions will come with a set of instructions from the manufacturer. Always follow the manufacturer’s directions. Steps 1 Begin by disconnecting the wire 1 from the condenser to the coil. The side of the coil that this wire came off of is the “negative” and is often marked “-” or “1”.
It is a good idea to leave the plug wires installed on the cap, to keep them in order. Remove the ignition rotor 3 and lay it aside for later re-installation. Make sure you do not lose this screw down inside the distributor! With the screw removed from the points, unplug the wire on the points that is going to the condenser 5.
Depending on the location of the condenser, you may need to loosen the distributor clamp and rotate the distributor to gain access to the small condenser screw. If you do rotate the distributor, mark its location with thin line of white paint on the distributor body running down on the distributor clamp and the engine case, in order to be able to reinstall the distributor just as it was.
Make sure the “post” on the bottom side of the pickup unit fits firmly into the unthreaded hole in the breaker plate that held the points pivot shaft.
